This began as a way to help my then 11-year-old son, who was bullied in school. As he entered middle school, I was determined to find a way to help him change the way he saw himself, as he was already beginning to show signs of depression, anxiety, and paralyzing fear of what other people thought of him.
He was placing his worth in the hands of his peers.
I knew that the other ways we had tried, which included speaking to the school, counseling, and sports, weren't going to cut it anymore. He needed to learn how to navigate this on his own, to learn to see things in a different perspective and not internalize it or act out in aggression.
My son and all our children will grow up and experience people, circumstances, and events
that are beyond their control, so why don't we prepare them NOW on how to handle it?

I have personally experienced the damage of internalizing my own feelings most of my life
and have seen what it has done to my daughter, who followed her pattern and others alike.
The thought of another child trying to escape their own suffering by hurting themselves or
acting out and hurting another is devastating. It's time we take action and become a part of
the solution. We as a collective are responsible for changing the world in which we live by
being the lighthouse. It starts with each of us, in our own homes, bridging the gap in communication, opening the door to express safely and constructively. Allowing our children to feel seen and heard, regardless if they are "right" or "wrong". Allowing for the freedom to see things from their own perspective.
Today, our children go to school and are told to sit, be quiet, and do their work "this way". How will they ever see things from a different perspective if we don't allow the space to do so?
As parents, we are always just doing the best we can with the resources available to us, and the information that our children ACTUALLY share with us. So why not provide them with a way to deal with what is going on in within them and around them? A sacred space where they can learn to navigate their emotions constructively and empower them to love, trust and believe in themselves. What if you actually worked and read through each day together, as we do, opening the door for laughter, communications, and trust!!
